Choosing the Right Feeder
Choosing the right feeder helps you offer the right food to the right birds. Different species naturally prefer different foods and ways of feeding, so offering a variety of feeders can attract more birds and a greater range of species to your garden.
Seed Feeders
A versatile choice for most gardens, designed for seed mixes, sunflower seeds and sunflower hearts. They are particularly popular with blue tits, great tits, goldfinches, greenfinches and house sparrows.
Peanut Feeders
Usually made with strong mesh that allows birds to take small pieces of peanut safely rather than removing whole nuts. They are popular with tits, sparrows, nuthatches and woodpeckers. Always use an appropriate mesh feeder when offering whole peanuts.
Suet Feeders
Designed for energy-rich suet balls, blocks and pellets, making them especially useful during colder weather and other high-energy periods. Expect visitors including blue tits, great tits, robins, starlings and woodpeckers.
Feeding Stations
Multi-hook stations allow several different feeders and foods to be offered together. Combining seed, peanuts, suet and water can create a complete feeding destination and attract a wider variety of birds.
Bird Tables
Open feeding platforms are ideal for birds that aren't as comfortable using hanging feeders. They can accommodate seed mixes and other suitable foods and attract species such as robins, blackbirds, house sparrows and wood pigeons.
Ground Feeding
Some birds naturally prefer searching for food at ground level. Using a dedicated ground-feeding tray for seed, mealworms and soft foods can attract blackbirds, robins, song thrushes and dunnocks. Keep the area clean and avoid leaving uneaten food to accumulate.
Simple rule to remember: Different feeders + different foods = more variety in your garden.
Start with a seed feeder and quality seed blend, then introduce suet and peanuts then utilise alternative feeding locations as you discover which birds are visiting your garden.
