Getting Started With Feeding
Getting started with feeding garden birds is easy. You don't need lots of equipment—a good feeder, quality food, fresh water and a little patience are enough.
GETTING STARTED IN 6 SIMPLE STEPS
1. Choose a Good Feeding Spot
Position feeders somewhere birds can easily see and access them, ideally close enough to trees or shrubs to provide cover, but not so close that predators can easily hide and ambush feeding birds.
2. Start With a Quality Seed Mix
A good all-round seed blend will attract a variety of common garden birds. Sunflower hearts are another excellent starter food because they're nutritious, high in energy and eaten by many species.
3. Choose the Right Feeder
A standard seed feeder is a great first choice. As more birds arrive, you can introduce peanut, suet or specialist feeders to attract different species.
4. Provide Fresh Water
Put out a shallow bird bath or water dish for drinking and bathing. Keep it topped up with clean water throughout the year.
5. Keep Everything Clean
Regularly clean feeders, bird tables and water containers, remove old or spoiled food and clear waste from beneath feeding areas. Good hygiene is one of the most important parts of responsible bird feeding.
6. Be Patient and Consistent
Birds may take a little while to discover a new feeding station. Keep a small amount of fresh food available regularly and, once they find it, you'll often see the number and variety of visitors increase.
